Kappa Alpha Pi
Declaration of Purpose
VALUES: Our name, symbols, colors, and motto all hold the values of our fraternity. Our name Kappa Alpha Pi stands for hardship, brotherhood, and progress and show not only our history but also our future. Our symbol is the crest with a Torch and Scroll, Book of Knowledge, and Gavel. This symbolizes the law, lawyers must know the law, and justice. Outside of our crest we have the Wreath of Victory and the Phoenix which symbolize our history . Our colors navy blue and silver where navy blue signifies the steadfastness and harmony of our membership while silver represents the security, reliability, intelligence, modesty, and maturity of the membership. The symbols of our fraternity reflect our values.
MISSION: The Pre-Law chapter of Kappa Alpha Pi Fraternity at the University of California, San Diego shall be to provide interested students with the opportunity to learn about the Law School application process, Law School, and the profession of law. This goal will be achieved by providing the membership with the opportunity to participate in events focused on law and service designed to help the community of law. This fraternity will also provide its members access to people in the area of law. Above all, this fraternity and its membership will strive to create a fellowship in the form of a fraternal bond between members of the organization, thereby providing the members with personal experiences to aid their search for information about law and law-related areas.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this Fraternity shall be to form a strong bond uniting students and teachers of the law with members of the Bench and Bar in a fraternal fellowship designed to advance the ideals of liberty and equal justice under law; to stimulate excellence in scholarship; to inspire the virtues of compassion and courage; to foster integrity and professional competence; to promote the welfare of its members; and to encourage their moral, intellectual, and cultural advancement; so that each member may enjoy a lifetime of honorable professional and public service.
In the Spring of 2018, the general body, along with the Executive Board Elect, of the University of California, San Diego chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity came to the conclusion that remaining affiliated with Phi Alpha Delta, International (the international governing body of our fraternity) is not in the best interest of our organization. Under the governance of Phi Alpha Delta, International, the sanctity of our brotherhood was jeopardized and our autonomy was severely limited.
Therefore, more than the majority of our members formally voted to disaffiliate our chapter and re-charter as Kappa Alpha Pi. There are currently Kappa Alpha Pi chapters at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Los Angeles, Cornell University, and many more reputable universities. The main goal of this transition is to preserve the resilient and intimate pre-law community at UCSD, and grow further than the Phi Alpha Delta International restrictions allowed.
Our mission is to foster knowledge of the law for undergraduate students; to provide service to the greater community and campus; to promote a strong sense of fraternalism among members; to uphold the ideals and integrity of Kappa Alpha Pi Co-Ed Pre-Law Fraternity; so that each member may advance [their] intellect while contributing actively to the well-being of others.
